and this definitely is our hangover edition. patrick, that's a spicy bloody mary this morning. well, the inaugural balls, that stretches back to tradition going all the way back to the first president, continued last night. star-studded commander in chief ball. president obama and the first lady honor the country's brave men and women of the armed forces. the first lady wore a gown by jason wu, the same designer she wore to the 2009 inaugural ball. performances including alicia keys, brad paisley, marc anthony and jamie foxx who performed "i can't stop loving you" for vice president biden and his wife, jill. earlier the president tipped his hat to the military in attendance. >> this little party is just another way to say something we can never say enough. thank you. thank you for volunteering. thank you for stepping up. thank you for keeping us strong. thank you for always making us proud.

i have no greater honor than being your commander in chief. >> four years ago the president and first lady attended ten official inaugural balls. last night the inaugural committee held just two. the lowest number of balls for an inauguration since the eisenhower administration. the highlight of the day, however, took place on the steps of the capitol where the president offered his second-term challenge to the nation. joined from the principles of the founding fathers in pivotal moments from america's history. president obama delivered an impassioned call for equality and unity. >> we, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths, that all of us are created equal is the star that guides us still, just as it guided our forbearers through seneca and stonewall, just as it guided all those men and women, sung and unsung who left footprints along

this great mall to hear a preacher say that we cannot walk alone, to hear a king proclaim that our individual freedom is inextricably bound to the freedom of every sole honor. >> organizers estimate as many as 1 million people filled the national mall as president obama offered a preview of his second term. four years ago he was the first president to mention the word "muslim" during an inaugural address. the president made history again yesterday, delivering the first inaugural address to mention gay rights. >> our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law. for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well. >> as part of his agenda, the president also focused on immigration reform and spoke at length about climate control. as the commander in chief exited the stage and began walking into the capitol, cameras were rolling as he paused to savor the moment.

>> i want to take a look one more time. i'm not going to see this again. >> nice little moment there. joining us now, chief white house correspondent from "politico," mike allen. what's your overall take on the aftermath of yesterday? >> first off, where's my bloody? they offered me starbucks. >> you want a bloody mary? extra vodka in his, please. president obama saying what he's wanted to say for ten years. the president unleashed unabashed, unrestrained knowing that he has the high ground. republicans, very dispirited yesterday. they realize that any leverage they thought they had with this president going into the next couple weeks evaporated. they saw how strong he was, how aggressive he was and to be

pushing this agenda. and none of the rounding of the edges that we've seen ever since 1994 when we saw him on the stage talking about bipartisanship. there was none of that. instead another term that was the first in a presidential inaugural address is collective action. when have we heard a president talk about that? never. >> let's start with some of the reactions. obviously widely mixed throughout this country. many said it was the most progressive speech he's given. newt gingrich, on the other hand, said he didn't think it was very liberal at all and call it had classically american. the fix's chris cillizza said it basically boiled down to the president, deal with it. republican senator john thune said it lacked the necessary outreach to get things done. and there was a basic disagreement over how ambitious the speech was. the national review online editors wrote, "the rhetoric is still soaring and the country still stagnating." david ignatius rote, the only voice that really soared at midday was beyonce's.

mike, are some of those fair? >> david ignatius certainly is there, this is unquestionably the most ideologically ambitious speech since president reagan's first inaugural address 3 # years a 32 years ago. this is what he would do if he didn't have congress. i think coming up february 12th, when the president addresses congress, state of the union message, there i think we may see a more practical vision. for instance, taking center stage here was climate change. >> we have the sound bite from this. i mean, this surprised a lot of people. i follow this issue very closely. it wasn't even once brought up at any of the debates leading up -- not by a moderator or by the candidates, and then he chooses yesterday to bring it up. let's listen to the sound first and then we'll comment. >> we will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so will betray our children and future generations.

some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires and crippling drought and more powerful storms. the path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult. but america cannot resist this transition. we must lead it. >> so the question is, is this just a preview of what's to come? maybe details in the state of the union, or is this just making up for lost time? >> i think it could be a little bit of both. but we saw in that clip a real shot the president taking at republicans. when he's talking there about climate deniers. another very unusual passage in this address. also may be up first. taking a shot at your previous opponent when we talk about social security, medicare, that's not being a nation of takers, throwing in that

message, i a real jab not only at mitt romney when he devoted convincingly but also paul ryan, house budget chairman, who he'll be dealing with and had made similar comments. what was interesting here was pushing climate change as the defining issue of the era. hard to see -- >> on the heels of sandy, the heels of last year's draught was one of the worst in our country's history going back to the dust bowl, you'd think there would be wind sailing in the right direction. >> that's right. he's putting something in the agenda that wasn't. we already had the pipeline to capitol hill so clogged. these three new fiscal cliffs coming up, gun control, energy infrastructure. he's putting this at the head of the line. immigration actually and even gun control got very little attention here. he mentioned newtown but only in passing. >> so do you think he held some stuff back for the state of the union? >> definitely. the state of the union will be more a blue print, a road map, but here he's talking for history. over the years this president has rightly been criticized for

not telling his own narrative, for not putting out a frame, for not connecting his own dots, telling his own story. here was the president doing it. he's writing the history book for himself. this is what he wants the history books to say about barack obama. >> mike allen, president it, as always. see you soon on "morning joe." >> bill, thanks for the drink. >> come on, patrick. today marks the 40th anniversary of the supreme court's ruling on roe v. wade, establishing a woman's constitutional right to have an abortion. new polling shows how unprecedented support is now. according to the nbc/"wall street journal" poll says 70% believe it should not be overturned, the highest since 1989. for the first time a majority of americans believe a abortion should be legal in all or most cases. officials who conducted the poll believe that the highly charged debate over contraception along with controversial comments the two senate candidates about rape and abortion helped shape these changing numbers. now to algeria. the late east that hostage

crisis. officials say three americans who worked for bp are among 37 workers killed in the attack as islamic militants stormed a natural gas complex in the sahara desert. seven americans escaped. algeria's prime minister says special forces were killed including a citizen who they believe coordinated the attack. three other militants were taken alive and being questioned. it included a team of explosive experts who had memorized the layout of the plant. investigators are looking into the possibility that they had inside help. the british ministry of defense says prince harry returning home after a 20-week deployment in afghanistan. the 28-year-old who's third in the line to the british throne serves as an apache helicopter pilot. during his tour, prince harry spoke about life in the military including whether or not he's ever killed taliban soldiers. >> take a life to save a life. that's what we sort of resolve around, i suppose.
